hey guys!! :)
I have a serious problem!! I love the hardcover books, they give me a special feeling, but they are so expensive, that I always buy the softcover, and when I buy a book I have 5 steps:
look at the title
look at the author
try to find out, what it is about
look at the statements of magazins and
look how much pages it has!!

sick isn't it??
how do YOU find books you would die for?? :D

I have a limited number of fiction books under my belt, so I listen to the people on this forum :p . It's worked well so far, but maybe I need a better method :(

i used to just browse in my favorite genre, pick one and read the blurb on the back and take my chance. i did pretty well with that. til i came here! i've got a list now that's a mile long! when someone gives me a recommendation, i look at the other books they enjoyed to see if we have anything in common. if not, then it's off to amazon's reviews i go!

Sometimes just by the author - regardless whether the blurb on the back makes the book sound interesting; through friends; browsing amazon.com (following their recommendations, and reading the reviews); or sometimes I'll be browsing the bookstore/library, and I'll see an author/book that I recall reading about (that's how I picked up Watership Down - via Stephen King mentioning it in The Stand).

I work at Barnes and Noble, so I get to kind of browse whenever I work. It's kind of a nice bonus, and makes it easy to find plenty of worthwhile books. The downside is, I find too many, and am left deciding which to buy, and how big I really want my bookpile to get. I guess I'd rather have to many good books to worry about then too few though. Plus, it makes it really easy to avoid falling into any fluff accidentally by picking up a book from heresay. ;)

G'day/night.....and all that stuff in between.

Well, I look at reviews on the net to find books that I'm not sure on getting, other then that I buy by the author, or the set (Like if I ahve book one)

Entirely by accident!!! All kidding aside, I've gotten many great suggestions on this forum and I follow links on Amazon pages for books I know I already like. If I've read and enjoyed an author already, then I am more likely to pick up another book by him/her, too.

Good method. Read reviews, look on the internet, chat with buddies--thats one of the main reasons I started posting here is because I was afraid to drop a wad of cash on a bunch of books I knew nothing about. Publishers can make just about anything anything sound good in a two paragraph blurb.

Yah, reader reviews are really great, especially if you find alot of readers saying the same thing.
Yeah, but I never open threads in any forum with just the title as the name of a book because of spoilers. Not only can that not help you find a good book, but can ruin one that you never knew was good. :p I didn’t want to know that Charlotte dies in the end of Charlotte Web and I’m bitter now!

You realise you just spoiled the bopok for everybody that reads this thread, henceb your a Hippocrit right? :p

And read Amazons reviews, they dun give away the endings!

hahaha. Yes, and somehow, I don't feel sorry. :D But seriously, What is proper etiquette regarding spoilers?
