I have a question...

I was reading the book "Evil Star" and on page 77, I came across something very odd. It looked like a patch. It was 1.5" X 1.5"square, in the middle of the page, and when held up to the light there are intricate lines throughout the entire patch, with a blank space in the middle occupied by a smaller square that is a little thicker than the rest of the patch. It is stuck to the page very tightly. I was reading the book until 2AM, so i was a little scared, i thought it was a bomb :p. Does anyone know what this might be, or how to remove it without ruining the page?

Thanks

That patch is used for security. Automatic sensor machines will go off if you have not purchased the book if you walk out of the store and the bookseller did not disengage the tag.

I think occlith is right, I went to the forum, and I looked at the images, and its a little different, but it looks almost exactly like the very first picture, is there any way to remove it without damaging the page? after all, I just got to a very good part, and its blocking 2.25 square inches of the page, and about 8 lines of text.

Wow... that's annoying. A big security device right over the text. They usually stick pretty good, so getting one off without destroying the page will be tricky. Solvent would be your best bet, but solvent would also saturate the page. Can you return the book where you bought it?

I didnt buy it, I got it as a christmas present. I just got around to reading it now. I dont know if the 'gift-giver' still has the receipt, so I probably can't return it.

Bring it back to your local bookstore anyways. Just explain the situation, maybe they'll exchange it for you.

lol, I am just red-faced because they are tracking my book in my house . I am, however, going to take it back to my nearest bookstore and tell them about it, because i cant get it off, i've tried prying awa atime bit at a time, but the lettering was coming off, so i am going to get a newone without something in it.

If you can't get a replacement from the bookstore, try using an adhesive remover such as Un-Du or Goo Gone.

I had a similar situation recently. I had a one of my kids' book, a fairy tale book, and one page had glued on to the opposite page for some reason - you know kids. Anyways, I opened it up and it defaced some parts of the text. I went into Amazon.com and looked up the book and was able to browse the exact page and wrote in the missing words.

yeah, kids do tend to use glue, paint, and crayons/markers where they shouldnt. but my problem, was that i had something glued to the page, not two pages glued together.
