Sorry I haven't been here much lately. Since June, my focus has been on a diet & exercise program designed to help me lose the extra weight and improve my overall health. While my diet and exercise has excelled, my reading has suffered. Lets be honest. . . I miss a lot of the reading I was doing.

I'm going to try to balance my life a little better, spending less time on my diet and dedicating more time to reading and B&R. I won't be able to read as much as I had been, but that's alright so long as my weight keeps dropping off.

Glad to hear you've been awol for a great cause. Always nice to know folks aren't lying bleeding in a ditch somewhere too...Some of us tend to wonder(which is codespeak for 'worry'). Continue taking good care of yourself!

First, congrats on the 30lbs.

Second, audiobooks!

Thanks, Sparky. Audiobooks is a great idea! I'm now spending 60 minutes 3 times per week on the stairmaster, might just as well spend it listening to the book I'm trying to read. Now all I need is a cost effective source of audiobooks.

Your public library is your prime source of free audiobooks. Another good source is something we have in Kanas..you might have something like it in VA.. My state library card provides access to many databases, and one treat is the ability to 'checkout' audiobooks on a downloadable format. I can check out a title for two weeks(I believe that's the timelimit). download it to my computer or mp3 player, and listen during the loan period. After the due date, the audio is deleted from the computer or player. You might talk to your favorite librarian about this, If nothing else, interlibrary loan service should cover the loan of audiobooks as well as any other loanable materials. Why pay retail?

I tried ten titles at my library with no luck. Perhaps I'm reading the wrong stuff.

My library is hooked into a statewide interlibrary loan system, which allows online access to the patrons. I can look up materials at home, send in a request for my local librarian to approve(they have 'preferred' libraries they check with first), and then they send that to the lending library to see if it's available. If my state system doesn't have what I'm looking for, I can check www.worldcat.org and find the nearest library to me(when you register you give them your zip code). Then can send that link to my local ILL librarian to pick a library from out of state. I have to specify a set amount I'm willing to plunk down for postage, but I've only had to pay postage when something came from out of country...that's when we found that the library has to specify 'US ONLY' on out of state requests. Live and learn.

Now all I need is a cost effective source of audiobooks.

Truck stops. You can rent audiobooks by the week. Also, you can buy audiobooks at Cracker Barrel (choices are very limited though) and return them when you are done. They charge you $1-2 per week you keep them though.

iTunes has audiobooks but I can't comment on their pricing.

The name escapes me but there is a Netflicks type place for audiobooks too.

Glad to see you posting again Robert. Balance is a good thing. Yes, you can over do it when it comes to books.:whistling:

Wow! So many choices, so little time.

Are you feeling all right, SFG75? You can over do it when it comes to books?

Hey Robert,
I totally understand your mindset right now. I went through the exact same thing about a year ago. I found that there is a fine line between good old fashioned, highly rewarding discipline and being borderline obsessed. :)
Mine was biking and weight lifting and I shed about 30lbs as well. I too was missing my reading and other even more important things.
Good for you for adopting a healthy lifestyle. I enjoy your posts and point of view, so even though I haven't been active here too long..... Welcome back!

Thanks, 753C. A fine line is right. I sometimes think I have a foot planted on each side of the line and the direction of the wind decides whether I'm being disciplined or obsessed. Things should get better when I reach my goal weight because I'll spend less time at the gym.

I'm still having difficulties focusing on a book, but now i think it's just a matter of picking out something that grabs my attention. I'm a little less focused on my diet and exercise and the hunger for a good book alive and well.

Life is good!
