I need a good book for my teen sister. Any suggestions?

I need a book for a 16year old very cool girl. She doesn't like reading, but as she has problems with English at school I make her read about 2 English books a year (English is not her mother language). The last book she read was Holes by Louis Sacher and she did not like it very much. So I need a good book which is cool and it should be fun to read (and not too long, about 300 pages). She likes sports, going out and has millions of friends.
Any suggestions would be helpful. LOL

By the way I'm becoming pretty paranoid with all these penguins showing up in weird places!

Maybe The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares or Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison? I've never read the Louise Rennison one, but it was pretty popular among the popular girl crowd when I was 14 or so. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was good and not too difficult.

What about Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice? It's a pacey easy read and something different. It's dark and sexy!

Gizmo, I'm worried about the penguins too. I found a couple skiing down my icecream the other day! And you know, the way they just stare at you and mutter to each other. Very disturbing!

If she's cool in an 'alternative' kind of way, try something philosophical or socio-political rather than a novel.

If not, my sister always used to like Judy Blume and Melvyn Bragg (Lady: My life is a bitch, Junk).

Hi, Gizmo (and hi, Sandy! LOL!)

I would suggest "The Thief Lord" by Cornelia Funke. She's a German author and recently won the Zurich Children's Book Award, as well as the Newberry. Although it's a children's book, it's very adult and I enjoyed it immensely. It's set in Venice and has two children running from an evil aunt and uncle after their mother dies. They meet a boy known as The Thief Lord, who is sort of a nice Fagan (Oliver Twist). It's very fast paced and exciting.

But if she likes sports a lot, then you might turn her on to "Go for the Goal" by Mia Hamm, the U.S. soccer superstar. It's about training and life and reaching for dreams. Here's the Amazon link so you can read about it:

Go for the Goal

Good luck!
Cathy

Also maybe the A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket? They might be a little too young, and they're kind of esoteric in a way, but I really loved them. And there are about nine of them, so if she likes one, there's inspiration to read more...

that was exactly the first one i thought
(i knew i should not chat with those gossiping penguins while you sleep, for sure they are the ones who told you about that , thats why you cant trust in a penguin)
my second choice would be jurasic park

i started reading as a tennager with those two and havent been able to stop since.

other which might be interesting for her its "the prodigal daughter" by jeffrey archer
its the second part of a trilogy, but its not absolutly necesary to have readed the first one, although if she likes it you can always get the first one for her.

Both good choices. They are on my suggestion list for my sister. :)

She saw the movie and like me she doesn't like reading books when she knows the end and I think it's a bit too complicated for a beginner.

I put them on my suggestion list.

The Thief Lord sounds great! If she won't read it I will. :D "Go for a Goal" is a bit too "American Dream" for an Austrian teen.

They are on my suggestion list now.

How about the Bridget Jones's Diary. It is quite popular and very funny.
She doesn't like the movie and therefor I don't think she would like the book.

"Jurrasic Park" is gorgous but she saw the movie and I think "The prodigal daughter" is a bit to heavy for a English beginner.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! You helped me a lot! :D

Fearless by Francine Pascal. It's the first book, in the endless fearless-series. I think your sister will enjoy reading it.
It's about a really cool girl, who kicks asses. ;)
