The door seemed older, dirtier, and even translucent when I reached and “touched” the door knob. It felt as if my fingers moved through the door itself to the outside air. I blinked and felt the cool knob under my touch. I let out an easy breath.
Autumn was near complete and the cool wind refreshed me as I sat with my legs dangling over the second story walk way with my slinky arms wrapped around the rusty railing. I looked up, downward and across the open u-shaped building. My spying eyes scoping the days happenings: The shady kooks were in their usual stations and the street solicitors discreetly tried to summon the few cars that motored on past.
The soreness just above my ankle was healing a little- my new point of entry: Mom could never detect it- not with socks on anyhow. Escape from this reality- the inner city in all its badness- was easy as pie. All I needed was Eddie.
It’s a good thing that Eddie became my shield from the attacks. I was getting beaten-up almost every day until Eddie ordered a halt to the abuse. Being white did not help either. As long as I followed Eddie’s direction, I could walk about without fear. Eddie was the big shot of the neighborhood and everyone did as he said without question.
