the right hand man,

Small, extra characters, who, while not being particularly significant to the plot, manage to add to the drama and add more to the story in their own way. For example, we may see a villain in a different light through the eyes of a child he cares for. Or see him through a victim's eyes. However you want to manage the smaller roles.
