Increase PM character count limit?

Darren, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to increase the private message character count limit which is currently set at 2000 characters. I run into this limit frequently.

Could you help, or should I learn to talk less? :D

Yea or nay?

Increase!! It's difficult when you want to include the quotes to keep your replies under the limit. And since much has been made of "taking discussions to PMs", this might help a lot.

I myself prefer e-mail. There are no small limits (unless you message 20 gigs worth). And, MSN, Yahoo, and AIM are handy messengers. Between those two, forum pm comes in as a last resort.

But, everyone has their reasons for what they will and will not do, and what they prefer.

But remember, everything that eats disk space and band width raises the forum's costs of operation, (I would assume). I gather that the coffers are not briming with immeasurable wealth.

This is sort of what I assumed. We are limitted to 70 messages - if the messages weren't limitted in length then it might be difficult to keep the size of people's inboxes down.

Of course, if this isn't the case, an increase would be nice! I've had to send two-part PMs in the past also.

Oh, and Sitarum. I prefer PMs to emails as I value my confidentiality.

I agree - I've had to send two-part PM's as well. Putting in quotes, as Miss Shelf as already stated, does make those available words go down pretty fast!

Don't forget, folks. You can always sign up for a free yahoo, or hotmail or other free email account, and have the convenience of e-mail, but maintain your confidentiality. Also, I have seen discussions about the ability of webmasters to read PMs, but I have no details on this, and I only mention this issue because you mention a concern regarding confidentiality.)

I think that she was meaning that she didn't want to give out her e-mail address - which is totally understandable

My point is, you create an email address just for forum use... like i could go to yahoo and create turkey_pedagogue@yahoo.com (I am sure that one is not taken.) Then...I give it to forum friends... instead of PM. No one knows anything about me because of that email... and if in 6 months I am unhappy with it, just get another turkey_pedagogue1000, and tell your friends.

And if you use Yahoo chat, then log in with that ID, and you can see your messages come in, and chat real time with forum members that use yahoo.

I agree with DS. I run into this problem constantly. I also don't feel the need to hoard PMs. I read them, reply and then delete. I'd be more than happy to have the limit set to 50 if there was a higher limit. It is very easy to save PMs to a text file if you are a hoarder whose mailbox fills up quickly.

That's a bit of a hassle, though. It's much easier just to sign into TBF to post as well as check your messages.

I don't mind the word count. I have never PM'd someone 8 pages worth of manuscript, so I have likewise never passed the 2000 word limit.

I wouldn't mind more PMs, though. I feel like I am constantly clearing out messages... half of them "sent".

We have to compromise between features and disk storage space, so the limit is set to 75 messages for members.

One way to cut down the number of characters is not to quote the original message each time you reply to a PM.

I'm pretty sure it's 2000 /characters/ , which would make a lot more sense.

Hah! So it's you who have taken all the interesting and weird names for my forum use! I've always wanted paymoreattn2me@yahoo.com, but I'm sure it is already taken now ever since you've revealed this devious little secret!!!

PMs are great for quick little discussions, and it's far easier to drop a PM to someone than to ask for email addresses and stuff. Not to mention avoiding to remember yet *another* set of userid and password.

But I have to say you did come up with a good workaround - email does seem like the best choice for those who would like to converse wordily.

p.s. Sitaram - did I ever tell you I keep thinking you're an Indian everytime I see your posts? :)

Oops... should have said one to two pages...
Agreed. Om my screen it is two pages full, almost exactly. Sometimes that's a few characters over.
