Inherited Books

The thread about treasured books brought to mind several books I inherited that are probably irreplaceable now. They are among my favorite things, as they have family history as well as art and reading pleasure. They are also made differently than books are now.

Some of these are:

an original Mary Poppins with drawings

A boxed set of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, circa early 1940s

A very small hardcover of the original version (non Disney) of Pinnocchio, which is very scary and weird, must creepier than Disney. He was really bad, not just dumb and naive.

The Gremlins by Roald Dahl, circa 1939.

An original Johnny Gruelle Raggedy Ann book, the illustrations of which are rich and magical.

A complete works of Shakespeare circa 1925.

Art books, like a vast and beautiful book of German Expressionist works from the 1930s and an early book of Miro's paintings.

A 1940s "Pierre Lapin", the French version of Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit. (Cottontail is called Queue de Coton. :) )

A book called Here of All Places about architecture, with little visual jokes like a dog peeing on a column of the Parthenon.

A complete set of Winston Churchill's books, The Hinge of Fate, The Gathering Storm, etc. I think there are six.

Anyone else have things like this to mention? I always scour used-book store for things like these, but having them handed down makes them extra loved.

My brother inherited my dad's Mark Twain set, so I had to go buy my own. But mine's more complete, even if it doesn't have the history.

I did manage to nab the complete works of Saki. If you want an interesting collection of short stories, look into it.
