Interesting New Music

I'm bored and need some new music to listen to. I've been scouring the web and have built up a list of people and bands to pursue over the next few months with respect to obtaining their CDs.

Such bands/artists include Rachael Yamagata, April March, Leona Ness, and Death Cab for Cutie.

I'm looking for more people to chase up and, on a similar note, if you know of any bands with a slight Arabian (think Jane Birkin's Arabesques) vibe then I'd also be interested.

Please don't respond if your only contribution is to be a twat or if you are going to suggest something popular that I'll probably have heard of - think obscure.

Kala Rupa by Greg Ellis. A little off the beaten path.

Just listened to the samples on Amazon and it sounds more like background music/soundscape stuff. The first "form" reminded me of a track from Aphex Twin's (as Polygon Window) album Surfing on Sine Waves called Quoth - only that was a techo percussion exercise.

Is there any vocals on Kala Rupa at all? I'm liking the subdued strings and some of it, at times, hints at almost becoming a sound explosion a la Dead Can Dance only without all the archaic/ethnic poetry and the excellent vocals of Lisa Gerrard.

hey abu, check out beasts of no nation by fela kuti and the afrika 70.

the story behind them might interest you. their village was burned down by the nigerian government back in the '60s (fela's own mother was thrown out of a window and died), so he gathered all the survivors together and formed a band in protest. if you went to one of their concerts, the nigerian police would be waiting for you outside with machine guns as you left. can you imagine that?

Are the albums just long pieces of funk? I looked at a couple on Amazon and they only have about 4 tracks but I can't tell much from the 30 second sampler. Are they instrumentals? One reminded me of Jimi Tenor although I can't think why. :(

the intros are long, but, no, their songs are not instrumental. it's pointless to sample them on amazon, because each song is like a half hour long. those clips weren't very impressive either. I'd recommend downloading a song or two first.

The following aren't really obscure since they're popular in their genres but I'll mention them anyway.

Industrial EBM:
:Wumpscut:, Das Ich, Skinny Puppy

Neo Folk:
Der Blutharsch, Death in June, Blood Axis

The following Synth pop(ish) bands might be more obscure:
Birmingham 6, Clair Obscur, Deux, Moskwa TV, Tyske Ludder

Thankyou. The only one I've heard before is Skinny Puppy. If I remember, they were forerunners to the latter day Front Line Assembly.

Yes, there are vocals on that CD. They are by some woman Ellis has done albums with before. The page at Amazon probably has some links to their other work.

If you're into something really different, how about 1920's Shanghai songs? They are in Mandarin, and it's something I've been listening to for a while now (no, I don't understand a word of it either - well, actually some of it I understand). Let me know if you're interested.

Have you heard Tinariwen? They're Touareg, so hopefully that qualifies them as Arabian, although I've heard they're music described (rather naffly) as "Saharan blues".

Some of these are newer, some older...Have you heard...

Sunset Valley
All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors
Beth Orton
Ivy
Alexandra Slate
Adventures in Stereo
Ofra Haza (esp. from 84-94)
Youssou N'Dour
