Introducing Karen

Hi everyone,

My name is Karen, I'm 32 years old and I live in the UK. I have been a HUGE reader ever since I was a child and have previously been an active member of various other forums in the past. A few years ago I took a step back from all online activity (forums, blogging etc.) and as a result managed to lose touch with a few good friends along the way.

More recently, and for reasons that I just can't explain, I seem to have lost my reading mojo completely. I do WANT to read, but for some reason I just can't seem to concentrate for any great length of time and have had HUGE gaps in between books which is SO not like me. I always used to have my head in a book and... well, to be honest, I miss it. So, I thought I'd find a new forum, make some new friends, and hopefully find my mojo along the way!

Oh, and for the record, you have no idea how hard it was for me to find a book forum. Yes, there are a few active ones out there, including one I was previously a member of, but none of them seemed all that welcoming... until I came across Book & Reader that is. So, here I am.

What do you like to read?

:welcome Karen, I agree with what you have said about finding a book forum. There just aren't that many. I think a lot of people are on Goodreads which I have entirely failed to get into although I am informed there are some good discussions on there. I hope you find a happy home and new friends here.

Thanks for the welcome.
What do you like to read?
A bit of a mixture to be honest with you. The only thing I'm not too keen on, or that I've not really tried to be honest, is sci-fi. I would like to try and read a few more classics though (Austen and the like) as I'm ashamed to admit I've only ever read one classic (or what I would call a classic).

It's amazing at just how few of them there are. I only found half a dozen or so, if that.

I know that there is a HUGE book blogging community so I thought book forums and message-boards would be all the rage. However, it seems like reviewing books rather than having actual discussions about them seem to be the in-thing at the moment.

Yes plenty of book blogs out there, too many really actually, as it is difficult to know which actually offer any value. Ultimately I suppose any review is just an opinion, but there are opinions and opinions. I feel the same about book reviews as I do about movie reviews. Please know what you are talking about :) Be sufficiently widely read to know the difference between good and bad prose. Know what the requirements of the different genres are etc.

But then I'm difficult I guess.

I do find that with a lot of book blogs, they're all reviewing the same book all within days of each other. I know that's it to help generate interest in said books which are probably being published that very week, but to read through dozens of the things all talking about the same book makes me lose interest in it really rather quickly.

Don't get me wrong I think there are some good book blogs out there, but it's the ones that offer some good discussion posts that interest me more.

You say you are finding it difficult to start a book. Have you considered either a nice magazine, or a collection of short stories to get you started?
