Ivan Klima: Love And Garbage

Have any of you read this powerful litte book by Czech writer Ivan Kima? This is another book I may need to dip into again one day, as I know I missed too many of Klima's nuggets due to my lack of knowledge of Czech life and politics. I haven't read Kafka yet either..

I've not read Love & Garbage, although I have enjoyed a number of his other books. Follow the link in my signature and click on books owned and then select books with the "Czech Lit" tag and you'll find them.
I like Klima a lot, and from my limited knowledge of Czech literature he seems to be half way between the more serious writers like Kundera (who's probably more of a French influenced writer these days) and the more traditional school of Czech writing which has quite an edge of humour, I'm thinking of people like Hasek, Hrabal and even Kafka (who considered his stories to be very funny and was confused that others didn't).

As Klima is on my mental list of authors to explore further when given the time, I'm put down Love & Garbage as the one to go for next.

Regards,

K-S

Nice collection you have there KS! I think you'll like Love and Garbage...it would make a terrific group read, with all those diverse themes and elements Klima wove into his 223 pages. I bet we'd get a good discussion going just on the passage 6 pages in, about why the MC hesitates to call himself a writer..

Klima's books tend to be tightly packed little things.

BTW - That listal site is quite easy to use and add books to. So, hint, hint, you could records your Olympic challenge books there, with a tag of which country they come from. If that was linked in your signature I'd certainly check it out from time to time.

:D I'm playing there now..oh the possibilities:D I think it looks much better than librarything..much more versatile. The price is nicer at well..

Free is always a good price. The major problem I have with it is the alphabetical order of authors is with thier first names not surname! I'm assuming that the next version, it says this is a beta version at the moment, will include an upgrade where that is sorted out!

That does seem odd. I've seen it elsewhere though and its a pain in the sitdown.
