I got a PM from a member who is very upset. Turns out that this person was an active participant in the thread and now I can't PM them because they've turned off their PM feature. Having posted in it myself, I then came to realize that hey!, something is amiss!. This thread is obviously in the "no-no" zone and should be locked and junked immediately.

3.9 Political and religious discussions are not allowed, except in the context of how they apply to specific books.

The union thread clearly flunks this test as; (a)No book is connected to the discussion in any discernable way; (b)It's political, it certainly doesn't fall into the realm of any other category.

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, but if the rules are the rules, then nobody, no matter how "loved" they are by others here, should be allowed special exemptions from the posted rules.

Yes, can we please kill off the most interesting debate in the last few weeks so we can all go back to discussing what we wear in bed. Some of us came here so our brains could waste away you know...

I understand why you're suggesting the thread should be locked, SFG - it is a political discussion, albeit politics with a small p - but I'm not sure what this has to do with you not being able to PM an upset member? Are you saying this member has turned their PM feature off because of the political discussion? But you said they were an active participant in it?

You mean everyone who contributes to such political discussions should get a warning? You should probably PM a moderator with a request that the thread be closed, if you haven't done so already.

This issue has been raised very recently - if you have a problem with a thread PLEASE can you PM a moderator and they will deal with it. It is not necessary to start new threads in the Website Feedback, Help & Suggestions section.

Thank you.
