Kumquats, a revelation

novella

I have eaten a lot of unusual things, but I'd never had a kumquat until today. Wow, what an explosion of citrusy weirdness. I only bought about 10 because I didn't know how to eat them. Gonna go get a bagful.

They have them in the store for Christmas. Who eats them at Christmas? It's one of those things like eels and Italians. All of a sudden the eels show up in late December, and a line of Italians forms out of nowhere.

Novella, I have 2 words for you. Hobnob flapjacks :p

Kumquat, hmmm. Hadn't even heard of them before today.

I have a fruity ponderation - gooseberries. Why do people feel like one when they're with a couple? And why do people claim they're furry, when they're clearly not. A grizzly bear is furry. A gooseberry isn't.

I like kumquats, but they're hard to find except in the larger cities. Has anyone tried a "pluot"? It's a plum/apricot hybrid. Really strange flavor. Not really plumy or apricoty, but something akin to a lingonberry.

Kumquats, well I remember having one when I was about 8. Before you ask, no, I didn't grow up in the tropics, unless you count the exotic fruits section of the Co-Op in Stoke-on-Trent. :D

Didn't have one after that until about 2 months ago. They're all right, but a little too weird for my liking.

Neighbor of mine had a kumquat tree in his yard when I was a kid, so I had a few. He also had a loquat tree. I can remember them being good, but can't rememeber what they tasted like. Ever have a cherimoya? I tried growing them but never got anything larger than a golf ball. Them're good!

You haven't lived till you taste a strawberry flavoured marmot!

marmot: stocky coarse-furred burrowing rodent with a short bushy tail found throughout the northern hemisphere; hibernates in winter

Okay, Wabbit. What am I missing?

Kumquats are nice because they they don't need to be peeled. I have tried mamei Pouteria sapota. It would probably have tasted better if it had ripened on the tree; it had the texture of mango and the flavor of sweet potato. At six dollars per pound i'll probably never try it again.
I would like to try carambola, breadfruit, and atemoya one of these years...

My precarious grip on sanity :D

Exotic fruits that, to me, are overrated and just don't taste pleasant are kiwi, starfruit, and papaya. They have a certain slime factor that's repulsive.

A kumquat is like a perfume ball full of warhead juice. Guava is cool, too.

In general, I steer clear of anything associated with Hawaiian cuisine, for personal reasons. No poi, paki, taro, spam musubi pour moi.

Starfruit is fantastic!! I ate a ton of it in the Caribbean last year, its the best taste ever :) Slimy? Pfwah! :D
