Library

Obviously everyone likes to read books in this forum. But does anyone hate the Library? I can't stand going to the library its like going to the hospital (well at least it is for me). If I like the book I don't want to return it as well. Plus I don't like using old books and it bothers me when somebody writes in them.

When I was in High School my teacher wanted me to jot down notes in books and I just couldn't do it even if I hated the book.

I go to two libraries. One has a poor selection and books that haven't been taken care of. The other has a wider selection and copies that are in decent condition. It goes without saying that I greatly prefer going to the latter library.

And yes, returning a book that you enjoyed very much is annoying, but returning a book you couldn't stand is . . . not fun, but at least you'll be glad you didn't spend money on it.

I don't like to borrow books from the library either. I just hate it when I see writings in them... Also I love the smell of new books!!!:D

However, I don't hate going to libraries, I just use them only for academic purposes, never for recreational ones...

For me, a library is a friendly place, going all the way back to childhood. We had many books at home, but the library had even more. The only disappointment was that - under a certain age - I wasn't allowed to visit certain shelves.

Now that magazines are so expensive, sometimes I stop in the library just to riffle through recent ones to see what's going on. Of course, if I have a period with a lot of doctor and dentist appointments, I don't need the library. Unfortunately my doctor seems to go for financial publications (Forbes, Fortune, Business Week) while the dentist is big on parents and children (Parenting, etc.).

Also, when traveling by car, as you pass through a small town and there is no McDonald's and no acceptable gas station, you can usually use the rest rooms in the local library.

I grew up hanging out at Libraries, so I still love them, and do occasionally go there just to grab a book or two when really bored. I do have some gripes about libraries:

1) A lot of people hang out at the seats/sofas for sleeping, and that annoys the heck out of me. Quite possible that the book they were reading was just so boring, they couldn't help it...but stilll...I don't like the sight of it :)

2) The airconditioning is also SO COLD!!! A sweater and a hot drink in between browsing of books is a must, even if its hot and sunny outdoors...

3) I can never find my most favourite books on the shelves - either they're the ones I have already read/not so popular/not so good. The fab fab ones on my TBR list are always loaned out, and I have to reserve them online (which then charges a fee to reserve, and there's usually a long waiting list - sometimes in the hundreds - for the more popular books).

4) Missing pages! Especially Library books which have gone through several pairs of careless hands!! Grrrrrr!!

This reminds me of a huge pet peeve of mine. When I go to a bookstore and see college students sitting on all the available furniture studying. They aren't shopping/browsing!

I often wonder how they can study in such a busy environment. I would be too tempted to sit and people watch instead of doing my work.

And let's not mention the homeless people who camp out at the main branch of the library downtown....

Maybe they were psychology or sociology students? LOL The other thing that I find bizarre is that they are studying while listening to their MP3 players. Now, back in the day I could zip through math problems while listening to music but actual reading and cramming were activities that had to be done in silence or near silence.

Yes. Let's not mention them.

My teens like to try to convince me their music helps them while they work..but I'm not THAT old.. or senile...yet:p

We won't mention them, but they sure do raise a stink if someone sits on them while they're sleeping in the furniture....literally

Not. Going. To. Comment.

I love libraries. There are some parts of the libraries of my past that I didn't enjoy, but for the most part I have fond memories. I love the smell of old books and my college library was so great.

The library here in St. Louis county, MO, is absolutely fantastic. They have a huge selection and most of the books I've borrowed have been in pretty good shape. However, my husband and I are probably going to move in the next year and I'm going to be sad to lose such a great resource.

I love the library. Unless a book is used and very cheap I don't generally buy books new without having read them first (with the rare exception of a book that is by an author I have no reason to doubt). I don't mind returning a library book if I like it because then I'll just buy it. It does bother me though when the book/edition is out of print. I hate it when a book is written in, but luckily I haven't encountered that much with library books. The worst are my current libraries though--because we live by the beach, all of the books have sand in them.

My current library is great for used books, so-so on DVD/VHS, and pretty terrible for renting books. It's very tiny because it is only a branch library. The main branch has a much better selection, but it's very dark and I don't like how they've decorated and organized it.

My old library though, that was a beautiful library. When I was younger I used to wish that there would be a blizzard while I was in the library and I'd be snowed in. It's big and bright and has a great selection of books.

I love libraries! How can one not? If you've really enjoyed a book you've borrowed, then you can always buy your own copy after you return the library one. Better than forking out your hard earned on books that you are not sure you will enjoy!

I have two local libraries, which have great selections. Sometimes, when I feel like going out, but don't have anywhere in particular to go, I'll take myself down to the local branch to have a browse. It's great! :D

I love the library. I lived in the country for most of my life, and only last year moved to where I had access to a library. I consider it a lifesaver, as all of my books burned in a house-fire. Over six thousand of them. It's a slow process to replace them all, and the library affords a good opportunity to read some new releases that I would probably never buy for myself. ( And I have read many this last year that I would have regretted purchasing.)

Ours is a small town library, and the books haven't been misused, just well loved and read.

I love spending time in the library, just being in the presence of so many books, but I don't like feeling pressured to finish them by a certain date, so I mostly check out travel books or other reference types, and read some magazines I wouldn't normally buy.
