Lionel Trilling - On Nabokov

Sitaram

kickbox
I just purchased a large paperback of Trilling's essays, entitled "The Moral Obligation to be Intelligent", edited and with an introduction by Leon Wieseltier.

One of the essays is about Nabokov's Lolita written aroung 1958, only three years after Lolita was published.

I searched in Google and found the essay on-line. Here is the link, if it is of any interest to anyone.

This does seem to be a subscription site, so you may only view the first 10 pages. I shall try to find this essay elsewhere on the net. My apologies for any disappointment this may cause.

I notice it differs from what is in my edition, but then mine is edited, and perhaps the online version is unedited.

There are some other interesting looking essays on Keats, Wordsworth, Kipling, and George Orwell, just to mention a few.

As I read, I hope to return to this thread with some interesting excerpts.

Sitaram,
Many thanks for a magnificent link!
You may have noticed that over on the Lolita thread we rather like the book and it's characters. But Trilling's appreciation is far beyond anything I could have imagined. I now see why he was/is so well respected. And I also now see that the isolated quotes from his writing that I have seen have never done him any justice at all. What an intellect and what a writer!
Thanks you very much,
Peder
