Looking for a book my dad told me about

My dad told me about a book written in the 70s i believe. The books is about this sheriff that just moved to a town and realizes things arent quite right. Soon he realizes they are all zombies...and so is he! lol. Ever since he told me about it ive been fascinated with the premise and really want to find it. If it sounds familiar, let me know!

This sounds a lot like "Dead and Buried", which was a movie that was based on a short story and had a tie-in novel written by Chelsea Quinn Yarborough. I've never read the story, but the film is good - a few logic holes in the plot, but some good genuine scares and a great performance by the town coroner.
