Looking for a book

Hi, Please help me, I read a book about 20 odd years ago and it was about a group of kids set I think in America and they were all from poor homes and they ran away together. From memory I think a couple lived with grandparents, the main thing I remember is that they ran away to this sort of island and that they took a cow with them, towing her alongside their boat! They must have been there for about a year on and off and set up a life there, only sneaking back to the mainland to get things that they could then grow themselves on the island. If anyone has any idea what the book was called I would really appreciate it:)
