'Gunsmoke' Actor Dennis Weaver Dies

By BOB THOMAS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Dennis Weaver, the slow-witted deputy Chester Goode in the TV classic western "Gunsmoke" and the New Mexico deputy solving New York crime in "McCloud," has died. The actor was 81.

Weaver died of complications from cancer Friday at his home in Ridgway, in southwestern Colorado, his publicist Julian Myers said.

Weaver was a struggling actor in Hollywood in 1955, earning $60 a week delivering flowers when he was offered $300 a week for a role in a new CBS television series, "Gunsmoke." By the end of his nine years with "Gunsmoke," he was earning $9,000 a week.

I saw this on yahoo awhile ago. Not another one! I loved him too. He was a great actor, and an interesting man. I admired him for building his tire house, and trying to make a difference. They say death comes in threes, I bet the film/tv actors are all sweating bullets right about now, specially the older ones. Two nice guys in a couple of days..

Already three, Don Knotts, Daren McGavin and now Weaver...:(

I liked Weaver as well. Not so much on Gunsmoke, but on McCloud.

When did McGavin die? I saw the thread about it, but don't remember hearing when.

and they were all on The Love Boat. Strange. Wasn't Dennis Weaver in some berth mix-up with Loni Anderson and Raymond Burr? Or was that the Jim Nabors singalong episode?

McCloud's gone? Downer. Loved that prog. Strange how these passings sometimes sneak in under the radar.

I'm shocked that he didn't even rate a mention in my local newspaper. And I'm not so sure that Darren McGavin's passing was mentioned either. Today's editorial cartoon is a nice memorial to Don Knotts though.
