An excellent writer, who I only discovered last year, Magdalen Nabb, not only wrote superbly but has a lifestory as interesting as her books'.
She was living in England, a single parent trained as a potter, when she ups and moves to Florence (not speaking Italian) with her son. Here, she begins to write a series, set in Florence, using the local carabineri as her locus.
The series begins with the 1981 "Death of an Englishman". It is very good - comparable to Donna Leon's work in Venice.
Tragically she falls off a horse in 2007 and dies having left a wonderful legacy.
