Hi
Has anyone read Maria McCann, As meat loves salt? It was one of the best books I’ve read. What is your opinion about it? Have you read something similar? I would like to read more books like this but haven’t found any.
For everyone who is interested it’s about
mid-Sixteenth Century England. The country is decimated by the civil war (King Charles & the royalists against the Parliament). There are starving soldiers roaming the land.
On an isolated gentle house in the middle of the country Jacob Cullen lives with his two brothers. They have fallen on hard times since the death of their father and are servants.
Jacob prepares for his wedding to another servant. By chance, he sees a band of officials riding to the farm, possibly bearing a warrant for Jacob and his brothers. Jacob is convinced that he is suspected of murder. After stealing a horse and some jewellery, Jacob flees.
Jacob reveals much of a personal nature to the reader as the novel progresses, a man with so little self-knowledge that he is constantly shocked by the consequences of his own actions. He is the anti hero who contrasts against the parliament soldier (and well-informed city creature) Ferris. He dreams of establish a (digger) commune on communal lands. Ferris is one of the famous diggers who in the civil war turmoil dreamed of creating a society free of masters. The novel continues with Jacob and Ferris beginning a homosexual relationship.
