The book start as the title indicate by the coming of a stranger to an isolate farm somewhere near Finland. The other characteres been an auster middleage woman, her twisted alcoholic husband and an old uncle first owner of the farm.
The place is rundown and Aaltonen, the stranger,is slowly bringing it back to life, along with the woman and the old man gnaw at by despair.
The husband, Alfred, is derenge by alcohol, a sick spirit,he is kept lock in the back room, and his most of the time refered as "the man in the room".
He is the burden of the woman, strait and strong spirited, she bought the farm to save the man from the evil of the city life, but it appear that the evil lies deeply in his soul.

The book is mostly about humain missmatch relations,Aaltoen too come from the city and ran from an unhappy wedding. The background of hard country life, mutisme, vast landscape, give the book a daunting atmosphere but Waltari magnificent writing make it captivating experience. We never dare to hope for the signs of doom hang heavily upon the farm,at the heart witch lay a dark pond of quick sand and the twisted heart of the husband.

I read few of the historical novels of Waltari before and loved them, but this is a masterpiece,an unique journey in the hearts of men,the slowl building of inescapable fate. One of the most significant novel in read, classic in its simplicity.
