The most popular names in my state is an interesting collection. I have to post this as for some reason, it has put a burr under my saddle. O.K., the fifth most popular name for boys is what I named my oldest, just love it, I know-we picked well.:D The number one name for girls is Addison. Who in the world would name their kid Addison? I have a feeling that people like the sound of the name, they don't necessarily know the meaning or history. That, or they're an M.D. and have a thing for naming their child after a disease that John F. Kennedy had. "Mommy, why did you name me Addison?" "Well dear, we thought it sounded neat.":rolleyes: Reminds me of the parents who name their kid "Slash" or "Ozzy" People, people, people.

O.K., I'm off the soapbox now.........Anyone else know of ridiculous names because a child's parents....well......yeah

I had to go with easy, average names for my kids. Andrew and Rebecca. only because my last name is odd. Ciszewski

When I named my daughter (whose nickname is Becca) I thought I would be unique at the time. Only to find out when she entered preschool that everyone else had the same idea.

My son, Andrew doesn't go by a nickname. We just call him Andrew. I tried to call him Drew, but it never stuck. He looks like an Andrew anyway.

My name wasn't popular when I was growing up and it was hard. People kept looking at me and asking my what kind of name it was. Now it's VERY popular. Everywhere I turn around I hear my name being called out.

Addison strikes me as a rather androgynous name.

People want to give their kids unique names but I think in almost all cases they don't consider what impact the name will have on them as adults. Name your kid Unique or Heaven Leigh and you're pretty much guaranteeing that they will become a stripper.

You shoulda been one of my Aunt Ruby's kids..she had Montine(f), Miracle(f), Lennnon(M), Alvalene(f), Oklun(M), Ronfurd(M)..Lenora and Vurna had the 'normal' names:)

Isabell, beautiful names for your kids.

Our tradition is to name our kids after our parents and in laws.
My son has my father in- laws name- James in english - Dimitri in greek.

And my daughter has (because my mom has passed away ) my moms name .Antonia

I don't like to cut them short or give them nicknames.

How is that even a name?

I'm naming my kids Sprtschk, Bnyyyyyyfor and ⅝.

Obviously you've never argued with my aunt:D Miracle got her name because she was a preemie and lived...that was more than 60 years ago, when preemies didn't usually survive. I don't know about the others. The only one I knew personally was Vurna; she was fun.

I know my nan was slightly insulted when my mom told her me and my siblings weren't going to be named after any family members...before all kids would be named after their grandparents. I'm glad I wasn't named after anyone.

I love my kids names, My sons name is more common , than my daughters.
My son has never complained, my daughter has and I told her that she has a special name and why I chose it.:)

I don't like to give nicknames as given names..We have: Anna, Rachel, Katherine, Emily, Benjamin, Daniel,Rebecca, Abigail, Ethan, and Elijah

Nicknames around go like this: Choo(Rachel), Katie, Em or Emmy, Ben, Becca, Beccaroo, Becca Lynnard, Becca Lynryd Skynrd, Roo..I know I've forgotten one of poor Rebecca's nicknames! Abby, AbbyBobPicalilly, Eli and Lije..

My brother was born 2 months prematurely. I'm pretty sure he's grateful that our (not too religious) parents didn't name him The Advances Of Modern Medicine. ;)

Seriously, I can see how most of those at least sound like names, but Oklun? That only works if your last name is California, and your siblings are named Berklee, Frisco and Sanhosay. Oh well. I'm sure he is (was?) a nice guy.

ETA: OK, apparently it's not unheard of as a surname. Huh. My semi-bad.

Well my nan's name would translate to 'train' or something so I'm real happy I didn't get that one. :D

I haven't a clue where she and her husband got that name..they might have heard the name of the place and thought it sounded nice..They were from Georgia..so they could have even meant it to be Oakland.. and whoever filled out the birth certificate might have heard them pronounce it without that final /d/. Who knows..Vurna is an odd way to spell Verna too. An Ronfurd? What kind of name is that? It might have been their spelling snafu, or the doctor's. Can't ask Aunt Ruby anymore...
