Most recognizable person in the world

Based on the press coverage of recent deaths I was wondering who you think is the worlds most recognizable person that's currently alive? Who's the most famous?

Who's death would certainly cause the next tidal wave of almost intolerable press coverage?

Since I'm pretty limited to American news my guess would be either the death of Osama Bin Laden or, of coarse President Bush. I'm sure the media coverage would be pretty severe in either of these two cases, but I wonder about the rest of the world.

Whose death would "out-media" the pope?

Those would be the two I'd guess, but then that could be extremely American and cocky of me to say that, since people in other countries might not agree at all.

Or some Hollywood moviestar. A prominent, current one. Not necessarily one who hasn't been acting in a while.

Donald Trump? lol

The first name that came to mind was Bush. I think that would seriously shake the world.

Certainly the death of “The Queen Mum” would be big news but I doubt it would make the same media impact of the pope’s demise. Maybe for one day, but not for many days on end. I don’t think I’d see an article in the Wilmington (tiny city where I live) newspaper’s sports section like I did with the pope.

Obviously if Bush were to die any time soon it would most likely be an assassination. So that in itself would make for many days on end of media coverage. Now if Bush were to die 20 years after his reign as president ends that’s a different story altogether.

A Michael Jackson suicide would be hugely news worthy and create press worldwide. At the very least that might rival the Schiavo media circus.

Lance Armstrong being killed riding a bicycle would prove huge in Europe I would think.

The death of either of Princess Diana’s boys would be huge huge huge.

With the exception of an assignation of Bush while he’s president, I can’t think of anybody who would out media the pope.

 Er, I hate to break it to you Motokid, but the Queen Mum is already dead.

I think a Clinton death would be huge news - I heard all about Bill's surgeries on news radio for two days in a row last month.

Kenny Shovel, once again you got me...

"I have been unable to masturbate for five days, and will not do so again
until her majesty is buried"

:D

I dont think you can just name names without considering how they died.

If Bush is killed by a terrorist car bomb it will be huge. I dont think it would have the same impact if he died from cancer for instance.

But if Bush is killed by a terrorist i think the media circus will be bigger than anything we have ever seen before.

If it is 2007 and Hillary has the dem nomination - probably her. Right now though, I would say Bill.

I was surprised how little coverage Johnny Cochoran's (sp?) death received. I will forever remember, "If the glove doesn't fit - you must acquit!"

Then again, my media consumption is solely radio and newspaper - so I miss the tv coverage.

To beat the pope though - Hunter S. Thompson didn't even do that...

I know! That guy . . . you know that guy? He's in that show? He's hilarious. I love that guy. If he died, it would be big.

You know, I was going to say Michael Jackson too. After I left for work, I thought of him.

err...not that I sit and ponder Book Forum threads all day. lol

As for the Bill versus Hilary thing, I'd venture to guess that a Hilary death might even be more of a shock. I mean, Bill's had health problems and I think a lot of people would mourn him. But because Hilary is becoming such a prominent figure in the democrat party and is a very good bet on Presidential candidate, I think her death might even be a bigger deal.

Gee, what a morbid thread!
