My Trick for When the Novel I am Reading Gets Boring

-Carlos-

Stop reading the novel. Start reading a (or two) short stories by different authour(s). That refreshes myself before picking up the novel again.

I like that idea. I prefer to put it down and then start again when I'm in a reading funk.

I do that also, sometimes reading 3 books at a time, and coming back to the first one later. Or if it is too boring, I just give it to a charity shop :)

That's when I usually catch up on my accumulated pile of magazines, clippings, and professional reading. When Library Science articles seem more attractive than the novel I'm reading, it's definitely time for a break.

I keep several novels going at once, staying with the one that is most interesting, and then returning to one of the others later. If a novel gets passed over too many times, I just move it to the partly read stack and forget about it.

For me personally, if I interrupt a novel, I'll never get back into it. And that builds the "Partly read shelf o' shame" others have mentioned, haha.
