I read this book a few years ago, gave it away, and can't remember the title/author. Here's what happens:

It begins in an unsaid country, probably eastern Europe somewhere, main character is a young girl. It's winter. There's a slight fairy tale element to the story. She finds this glass ball out in the woods that has colours she has never seen before, because everything in the village she's from is just a bunch of dull grey tones.
She leaves the village, goes to a port city in southern Europe, falls in love with a circus performer; they get married... they take a boat to NYC... they have twin boys... the father and the twin boys die... they also had a little girl, who's a nasty girl, and the mother doesn't care for her too much...
Next the story shifts to the young girl.... she has a son...... who runs away or something..... she has a daughter, who she doesn't like.....
Next the story shifts to this daughter..... and so on. The men/boys always disappear, and the book's about four generations of women who seemingly can't stand each other but must live together because of poor circumstances.
The book wasn't particularly amazing, but the writing style was decent enough and remember the book's name is driving me nuts.
