i have two phrase that i'm having trouble with.

1. They walk out on deck ( ) carrying small gages. ( i think there goes a comma, but i could be wrong)

i think there could be a comma because i can phrases it like this:

2. They walk out on deck and carry small gages.

--------------------------------------------------------

the other one is.

3. The truck rams the car, knocking John down in his seat.

(i'd say yes , a comma) because i can make this phrases:

The truck rams the car and knocks John down in his seat.

The first one should be as follows:

Carrying small gages, they walk onto the deck.

Thus so, because a participle must be as close to what it describes as possible, and it should need a comma.

The second one can go either way, depending on if you'd like it to be one action or two. The car could either hit the car and in the meantime knocking him over, or it could do both as seperate entities.
