Back in my sophomore year in high school, I had to do a final paper on a novel. It was a break down and dissection of the novel and the subject. Back then, I found that, while mildly entertaining, it didn't really seem all that special. Even still I qualify it as the most morbid thing I've ever read. But now, six years later, I can't seem to get the memories of it out of my head, and for the life of me, I can't remember the title and author.
The novel is a historical-fiction set back in the American Civil War from the view of a young Southern teen. His town is captured by Union soldiers and the boy is rendered mute from the trauma of seeing is home razed to the ground. Through out the story, he goes through the state (I want to say the Carolina's, but I'm not 100% sure on that) led by the ghost of one of his family's slaves, hunting for the black dog with red eyes he'd seen when his home was destroyed. At one point, he comes across a girl who calls him Daniel Onions, and unfortunately, that's the only name that sticks from when I read it.
If anyone could help, I'd be very appreciative.
