Hi! I am searching for a fascinating book which my 4th grade elementary teacher would read aloud to the class. Sadly my teacher passed recently, and since the book was never assigned reading (I'm assuming she brought the book from home) I have had no luck with the librarian of my elementary school. I am hoping that perhaps someone may recognize the story.
I only remember a few details, but hopefully they'll be enough to make a start. It is a fantasy story that follows a young boy who dies and is reborn in an after-life world that is fought over by two groups of people. I believe there are dragons, and that If you die in this after-life, you then go on further into the after-life by entering another world.
The main detail that I remember vividly is the boy temporarily goes blind as he crosses a dried up sea-bed (with a dragon companion?). The sea-salt that covers the sea-bed blinds the boy in the same fashion that sunlight reflected off snow can blind a person. My memory after that point is fuzzy... I believe the dragon transforms into a smaller creature and guides the blinded boy from the boy's shoulder.
I think it was a fairly inappropriate book to be reading to schoolchildren, with all the death, violence and after-life nonsense. But still it was a fascinating story, which my teacher never finished reading to my class! This is the beginning of my internet hunt, and if you know of anyone or any website that may be able to help me on my search that'd be great!
