need help on a book.

This book is fiction. It takes place in Santa Fay New Mexico.. The main character is a guy who was an ex CIA agent or some government agent. He meets this girl who is a reality agent and buys a new place. Then someone comes into his house and tries to kill him and he thinks it because of his best. In fact, it was because of her and her ties to the mob. They are trying to kill her because she ran away or was a girlfriend to a mob person. The book is about 10 years old or around there.

Could that be a john grisham book? a very similar story of someone hiding out in Mexico, girl was a lawyer who did help him to get a house. i'll see if I can remember the title,
