I just got this review for my book a few days ago and I'm pretty excited about it. There's nothing better than someone who doesn't even know you has good things to say about a silly little story that you wrote.
Josh McGowan is an agent for U.S. Naval Intelligence who is worried about cutbacks. He is working in France protecting the fun-loving daughter of the US Ambassador. To say the least, he is bored silly. This is no way to use a mechanic for the US Navy. Meanwhile, Ismail Rafjani and his new prot? in terrorist activities, Kafik are in the process of buying heroin from a South American Drug Lord. when the deal is done, just for kicks, they blow up the car of the drug lord while he is driving away. Rafjani has always eluded the police, but he is becoming more and more well known as he continues to attack the innocent of the world. When Josh's assignment ends in France after almost being blown up himself, his friend asks him to check out a boy in college who will be soon joining Naval Intelligence. The boy's girlfriend, Jen, has her eye on another man, this one of exotic origin. Jen falls for him quickly, and soon realizes her mistake, as he become quite brutal. Little does she know that she is dating Kafik, a terrorist. Josh ends up saving her one night, but ends up in the hospital after a fall into a tree. Kafik finds Jen again and kidnaps her and Jen's friend. The girls are forced into performing terrorist activates in Germany. Josh is sent to South America when he recover on another mission. But when he learns that Kafik has Jen, he decided right then and there to whisk her away to safety, even if it means his job.
An Innocent Among Them is the second Josh McGowan novel by Jack Allen. It is a fast-paced spy thriller that takes place all over the world as one man struggles to feel valued in his job in an ever-changing world. As the Communist world crumbles, the US Navy is finding little value in the type of man he is.
Having been 2-½ years since I last read about Josh McGowan, I was having a hard time remembering who he was. In reality, I didn't need to refer to his first book, Change of Heart, to thoroughly enjoy this one. An Innocent Among Them is a fast-paced thrill ride that never seems to stop. What I like about Josh McGowan is that he is not perfect or polished. I like that he makes mistakes and gets hurt. I like that he has a human side and is worried about Jen. I also like how persistent he is and how he is always showing up at the right time to foul up the plans of the bad guys. There are not a lot of twists and turns in this book, but they are not needed. As terrorists have now taken over the Communists as the bad guys of the world, it is only fitting that Josh becomes embroiled in some of their activities. Jack Allen does another great job in An Innocent Among Them of bringing the action to life. This is an excellent book and I look forward to the further adventures of Josh McGowan . . . that is, if he still has a job.
I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
