New to the site and reading

Recently I read LOTR's, and discoverd that I enjoy reading. Can someone suggest good books and authors to check out. I don't want to read just anything, but books that are actually worthwhile and have meaning. Perhaps poetry too. What should I start with?

Phew! If you are just starting out reading then I suppose The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger is one place to stop, The Outsider (sometimes called The Stranger) by Albert Camus is another. If you liked LOTR, you may like Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, which consists of The Golden Compass (Northern Lights, in the UK), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

A little of bit of Charles Dickens, too: Great Expectations, perhaps.

And some John Steinbeck. Of Mice And Men is a good one to start with.
