Hi everyone. I'm Vicki and I've been accused of reading too much and having too many books in my house. From the posts I've read here, I may be among like-minded folks here! I read a little of all sorts of genres, but specially love alternative history, fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, and non-fiction. Some of my favorite writers are Sharyn McCrumb, Eric Flint, James Alexander Thom, Nevada Barr, Jack Finney, and O. Henry. If I made a list of every author I enjoyed this post would take several "pages" so I'll stop now :D I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you fellow bookaholics.

HI!! So, what exactly is alternative history? Are we talking historical fiction? Or something even more "alternative"? I'm intrigued, as history and fiction are two of my very favorite things!

Hi and welcome :)
We had to read short stories by O Henry in our course and I remember enjoying them! Your post reminded me of this! Thanks :)

Hi, Vicki

Have you tried Kingsley Amis? He wrote two very ironic alternative history novels: 'The alteration', where Reformation never happened and Europe is controlled by the Pope and 'Russian Hide-and-Seek', set in Britain taken over by the Soviets.

Hi all. I may not be in Kansas anymore, but I know the way back..now where did I leave those ruby slippers? I keep clicking my heels together, but nothing's happeing ;)

I'll have to check out the Amis book-sounds interesting. Alternative history is a cross between historical fiction and fantasy, usually without mythical creatures or wizards and such. I love the "what if" aspect of it all. One favorite I read last year was The Two Georges by Richard Dreyfuss and Harry Turtledove. It asked the question, what if George Washington and King George 111 had met privately and negotiated a peaceful way to avoid the American Revolution. What would life be like in the 21st century? Great story.

VICKY! You read too much!!!

I guess you get accused of that a lot? Well, we won't cut you no slack here! Just kidding! Glad you enjoy reading so much and there is no such thing as reading toooo much! So get comfy and enjoy our forum before the world ends. Or a penguin eats you. Or something.

:)
