nostalgia video, when the internet was something new

i dont feel nostalgic, but i found it interesting since its not common to find this kind of newsreports talking of this new thing called internet, funny thing, a medium where its unusual to find info of its own growing stage, i mean you can find a lot stuff about the darpa project and the guy who invented the www but its the first time i stumble with something like this

When I read the title of this thread, I thought I was going to see the "Dancing Baby"! :)

It's been fascinating watching this infant technology (pardon the pun) growing up. I remember hearing about this "American Online" thing many years ago and thinking to myself, "What could conceivably be the point in that?" :eek:

Further back than that, I went to hear a "lecture" (using the term loosely) by 60s icon Timothy Leary. The man could barely finish a thought, let alone connect two sentences together that made sense (this was back in the Big Bad 80s), but he foresaw a time when people would use computers to communicate individually across borders and barriers of time and distance. He believed this would help build a new social fabric and eventually change how nations are governed, because people would not want to drop bombs on their friends. We are not yet there, I think, but it was an interesting viewpoint back in 1984.

It's pretty interesting and funny to see that! I would like to hear what the guy interviewed things of the internet now.

He is very optimistic in the interview about how people are communicating about music, art and so on. I wonder if he has ever gone into yahoo ;)

The technology is only as good or as bad as the people using it. And "kewl"!!! :mad: It's become the cyber-equivalent of "like, ya' know..." in real-time conversation -- I read it and instantly become disinterested in anything the offending party has to say. Sorry, mini-rant. I'll stop now.

AH! Just wanted to add in reply to you :) Yes, internet is for good and bad uses. It's just a shame that it's used mainly to hunt for porn and check out footballs scores :)
 
Ah, nostalgia, this took me back to that wonderful semester in college when I almost flunked out because I was telneting to MUD's every chance I got, sometimes 24 hours straight. Good times.
 
Very interesting to watch - I've only been a part of the 'modern' internet, the one we know today, and I wouldn't be able to live without it, now. It's strange when you consider it's only really in it's baby-years.

You are right, it's only in it's baby years and it has affected and changed so much! It's impact cannot be understated! I think that in the decades to come it will will really start to feel the impact.

Although, the dream of it being a totally free place where we exchange ideas seems like it won't come to pass. Those in power and those with money want to keep it that way. Wouldn't do to let the sheep get out of line, now would it? :)
 
Ok, so I confess to following football on the 'net (curse that 8-hour difference that keeps me in the office during the really big games), but never have I hunted up porn. I enjoy finding those little corners of the web that offer lively conversation between interesting people with a relaxing atmosphere (gee, a lot like this place come to think of it). Some of them have been so successful that many of us members have met each other and started lasting friendships and the regular members are like family.

It will be interesting to see where the technology will go in the next 10 years. It seems to me that more and more people are personalizing their own little niches in the 'net, with blogs, homepages, etc. On the other hand, businesses are becoming more savvy about the web and reaching the folks on it.

I sat down at my first computer as a sophomore in high school. The only thing is was good for was "Space Invaders." I am astounded at the changes that have come about since then. One night recently, I was working on a story while listening to music and chatting with a friend from far away, all simultaneously and all with my computer. If only they would package it in an attractive wooden cabinet instead of icky gray plastic. Oh well, can't have everything. :)

Sounds like you need a mac, or a nice laptop. Ever since i got my first laptop 5yrs ago i've never gone back to desktops. They seem so excessive. But desktops are getting sleeker as they try to get a foothold on domestic life. Pretty soon home entertainment will be based around a pc, tv's will have internet access, and consoles already do. Bleak times ahead for people like me who prefer simple things to be left simple.

There are some damn attractive desktops available!

And Daniel, you're absolutely right about 'people who pefer things simple'. My brother, for instance. He wouldn't know what to do with a computer if his life depended on it. All good and well, but he will need to be able to work a computer lateron in life, that's a given. Stubborn little (in the biggest sense of the word) bugger he is!
