OMG!! Lightning vs Flyers; Flames vs Sharks

Raven, have you been watching today's games? Unbelievable. There go all my predictions!!

Guess I'll be cheering for Calgary, but I've a horrible feeling it's going to be a San Jose/Philly final!

If I remember correctly I'm only batting 500. I thought Toronto & the Av's would make it. I'm going just the opposite of you though Ell. I think it will be Tampa Bay & Calgary in a run for the cup. Lacavalier, Richards and St Louis are turning it on at just the right time and The Bulin Wall is no slouch. And if that's not enough, Andre Roy used to play for our Komets. :D

Calgary should have a little confidence in themselves after taking out the Wings and when he's hot there's almost nobody better than Iginla. He's going to need a lot of help though and I fear that may be the Flames downfall. (But Donovan and a few others have started to make their mark)

I'm with you, I'll be rooting for the Flames but to be honest, I think lowly Tampa Bay will skate away with the cup.

And Buddy, I used to be a big basketball fan until around the time that Magic & M.J. retired (the 1st time) but anymore the sport has been taken over by rap music, tattoos and "look at me, look at me". It's not a team sport anymore. The players are more concerned about shoe endorsements than they are about the image of the game and I can hardly stand to watch it(at the pro level).

i've heard a lot of hockey fans say they don't like the urban direction that the NBA seems to have right now. i don't understand how it is any worse than a sport where fighting is not only accepted, but expected to a certain degree. i watch a lot of basketball, and from from what i've seen most of the things that people dislike about the league are off court issues. contract disputes, shoe endorsements, tattoos, etc are all thrown to the side when the games are played. i honestly don't think those sort of things should be a reason for someone to dislike the sport. maybe the players, but not the sport.

as far as them not having respect for the game i'd have to disagree with you. guys like Garnett, Duncan, Kidd, Peja, are all fantastic players, yet humble and very appreciative for where they're at. the league as a whole i made up of many others like that. sure there are guys that are only concerned about themselves, but that is the same in any sport. for the most part i think NBA players have a great respect for the game. it's a lot of the young guys in the league that lack this.

*******

as far as hockey goes, i just can't get into it. i'm sure if i actually went to a game it would be exciting, but it's hard to get pumped watching a hockey game on tv. i don't see the fascination with watching a bunch of guys with sticks skate around, but others can't understand why people like baseball, football, and basketball. to each his own.

really no point to any of this... just wanted to drop my thoughts.

Yep, to each their own. We could go back and forth for hours but it would do neither of us any good.

There's no doubt that basketball is the more popular of the sport in the States and I still love to play it AND watch it at the college level but the pro's just turn me off.

By the way, from what little I know about the current state of the game, didn't Kidd have a little bit of a domestic dispute that didn't help his image? (or his wifes if I remember correctly)

To further prove my ignorance, I never even heard of Peja.

And should we even touch on the subject of Kobey? I was very, very dissapointed in him to say the least.

I'm an old timer. My favorites were Bill Russell, Magic, M.J., Pistol Pete and Dr.J. I could probably rattle off another dozen from that era as well. (Barkley, Issiah, The Big O......) I'm not saying the there isn't anyone playing today that can't replace them, it's just that when I saw a trend I didn't like I gave up watching it.

One more item. Would you please explain what you mean by "urban direction"?

yeah Kidd did pop his wife, definitely wasn't thinking about that as i wrote that. he usually comes off as a very nice guy, lol definitely could've chose another example, but you got my point.

by 'urban direction' i simply was referring to the rap music culture that you referred to in your post.

yeah, since you came up in a time with all those guys i can definitely see how today's game doesn't compare. i watch a lot of ESPN classic and can appreciate how the game used to be.

ah one thing though. since you watch hockey maybe you can help me understand this. what exactly is an offside penalty in hockey? when i play it in video games i get called for it a lot and don't know exactly how it works. please enlighten me because it really bugs me lol.

My team already got knocked out of the running for the cup...of course, that would be the Kelly Cup (ECHL)...:(

Since I don't watch tv, makes it hard to keep up with profession hockey, but I've been keeping up online. Been a very interesting post-season from what I've read.

Buddy, I don't see how anyone can enjoy the game of basketball, myself. I find it to be rather boring. I actually only really enjoy football (American), hockey, and soccer, to watch. You're certainly right about to each his own.

I don't know if your video game works the same as a real game but basicly a player is offside when an offensive player crosses the blue line before the puck. The determining factor is the posistion of the skates, they must both be over the line ahead of the puck to be considered offside.

RaVen, I wouldn't mind a Tampa Bay v Calgary final.

Kiprusoff is looking unbeatable and the team in front of him is playing with more confidence every game. What's that old cliche - "Goalies win championships"? You could see the doubt creeping into Detroit, the longer Kiprusoff kept them off the scoresheet. (Same thing happened with the Canucks.)

Can't stand the Sharks, but they are a nasty, gritty team and are on a roll having demolished the mighty Avs. It should make for a great series.

Kinda worried about Tampa v Philly, though. The long lay-off for TB may hurt them. I guess you could look at it 2 ways: Philly is on a high after beating the Leafs and will carry that momentum into the next series; OR - Philly is banged up after a brutal series with the Leafs and won't have anything left against a well-rested Lightning.

Anyways, looking forward to the next round. :D

BTW, I share the same feelings that you expressed about the NBA. Sure, there are still good guys around like Tim Duncan, Garnett and Peja (can't spell his last name) - but it's the over-all chest-thumping, look at me, ain't I great attitude that turns me off watching many games. I try to catch certain teams like Dallas (Steve Nash is from around here) and Sacramento (Bibby and Peja), but not many others.

Ell

That's what they say about goalies Ell. Look at how far Anaheim went last year. If Kipper stays hot , look out.
Again, I can't say how impressed I am with Iginla too. It's gotta be tough being the go to guy in a small market like Calgary. He really showed the world a few things in the Olympics though and his game has moved up another notch in the playoffs. He's finally getting to be as physical as he needs to be and I can see the comparrisons with Forsberg(my favorite player) if he keeps it up.

I think Tampa Bay has youth on it's side against Philly.(Look for St Louis to do magic things) I like J.R. but after that last good shot he took, I wonder how many more seasons he has left in him (sneaky devil). Philly's got 1 clear edge though, their coach. If they listen to Hitch he could take them all the way....but again, will their goaltending stand up in the big games. And how much will Bobby Clark interfere? I swear that man would kill just for one more chance of lacing up the skates himself.

I don't have many feelings one way or another about the Sharks but I will say this, I've always liked Ricci's game. He's the type of guy a team needs if you have any hope of going all the way.(gotta love his smile too).

I wonder how Selanne feels today after leaving S.J. to join the Av's.

The Av's....my poor, poor Av's. Do you think their coach is safe? I wouldn't bet on it. You know what player loss I think hurt them the most? It's not Roy but Chris Drury. That boy had a knack for clutch goals and I curse the man that decided to get rid of him. I feel for Sakic too. That man's the class of the league and they wouldn't have got as far as they did without climbing on his back (and Forsberg's too of course)

I think we're going to see some major changes after this season. Maybe it'll be good for the game. It's bound to be good for the smaller teams. The dynastys will fall by the wayside and the oldtimers , ala Detroit, Colorado, Rangers, etc are on their way out the door.

RaVeN

Heh, this shows how long its been since i last paid attention to the hockey, when the heck did the Lightning ever start winning games!!

And last i checked, Selanne was still at the Ducks  Oh well!!!

Phil (Rangers fan, why do i always support the crap teams??)

Good question Phil. TB started winning last season but it wasn't until this one that they really started to jell. Personaly, I have a hard time even looking at their sweaters without getting a laugh from their logo. Not to mention, I don't even think a team belongs there after teams like the Jets had to fold....but anyway, they've got a good team now and I hope they do well.

I always liked Selanne but this hasn't been his season. I think he last played for the Ducks around 4 years ago and went to San Jose from there. Guess it has been awhile since you've checked.

The Rangers are a case of all dressed up and no place to go. They spent record bucks on talent but all of their superstars together couldn't accomplish squat. Just another case of a team trying to buy themselves a ring but not even able to make the playoffs.

New Jersey's the one that shocked me. How 'bout you Ell? (and any others)

Would that be the Express you're talking about Chewbecca?

I feel your pain. Our team was swept out in the second round last weekend. It was very dissapointing since we won it all last season and had most of the team return for this one.

How long have you been a fan?

RaVeN

Im still waiting for Gretzky to come out of retirement :D Or one of his sons, he has sons doesnt he??!! Still, i guess he's too busy being Canadian now!! :)

Yes! I love the Express. Been a fan for several years now, since my friend introduced me to them. Never watched much hockey prior to that. Unfortunately we're moving further away from Roanoke, and won't be able to get to many games next season :(

Too bad you're moving away from the Express. I love minor league hockey, it's the backbone of the sport. You know those guys must love playing the game because at that level they sure aren't getting rich.

RaVeN

I agree with you. I actually prefer the minor leagues, because the guys obviously must love the sport. I kind of get tired of major league attitudes, in all sports. I grew up watching pro-football, which I love, but seriously wish the players would shut up and play, sometimes.

About 5 years ago our team left the IHL, which was 1 step above the ECHL. We had quite a few players that went back and forth between leagues so I'm sure we saw a lot of the same guys play over the years and I followed your league pretty heavily at the time.

My best friend's mother used to have players stay ay her house every season and it was nice getting to know some of the guys on a personal level. There were a lot of great partys and BBQs that I have happy memories of.

Hockey players just seem to be the most down to earth athletes for some reason...IMO

Yep, he has sons. I always thought it would be cool if his and Mario Lemieux's would play in the NHL some day.

Gretzky also has a few brothers. One of them played for our team for a few seasons a couple of years ago. He's not bad either for that level of hockey and played this season in Port Huron, Michigan.

I can't imagine how busy Wayne must be. Between being part owner of the Phoenix club, heading up Canada's olympic team, endorsements out the wazoo and his passion for golf, it's a wonder he's found time to have any kids at all. And his wife is no pooch either BTW.

I bet it was interesting to meet the players on a personal level. In the town from which I hail, we have minor-minor league baseball, and many of my friend's families have hosted players over the summer. Of course, my hatred of baseball didn't encourage me to meet many of them. I agree that hockey players seem the most down to earth, though I'm not sure why.
