Passing on books.

Bookcrossers do this every day! And not only that, they plot and plan how to leave books so some one will pick them up and take them home!

Has anybody ever finished a book and just left it down in some public spot for someone else to pick up and read?

I do this often. I buy books at 2nd hand bookstores and the goodwill so if I don't re-donate it I'll just leave on a table at work or on a bench in the park. I'm done with it, so maybe someone else wants to read it. Now, if it's a book I love like, HP or Mr. Maybe, then I'll keep it. I like to read books over and over when I'm in that kind of mood. ;)

I've done this a couple of times with BookCrossing. The only one that has been caught (to my knowledge) is Blindness by Jose Saramago.

I have left books behind on accident before (I can be a bit scatter-brained). Every time when I came back someone had thrown it in a nearby trashcan. So I always got them back, except one time when the trashcan was gross and I decided to pass. :p Based on that I probably wouldn't bother trying to leave a book behind on purpose around here. I don't meet a whole lot of people that like reading. Actually usually when someone sees me reading in public if the book is a hardback with the dust jacket missing 9 times out of 10 someone will come up and ask me if I'm reading the bible. I always want to tell them, "You know there are other books in the world besides the bible." Anyway, if I left a book somewhere it undoubtably would end up in the garbage. However I have picked up a book someone left behind before and read it. I assumed they left it by accident, but maybe they did it on purpose.

Usually as I'm clearing out my bookcase I'll take the books to Half Price Books and sell them. A lot of times I'll have some stuff that I know they won't buy, or things like advanced readers that I can't sell and I'llleave those in the lobby of the apartment complex and someone always snatches them up.

I did that once. It was a book that someone left behind at my college's student center. When done reading it, I put the book back where the person before me stored it.

Otherwise, whatever books I don't want go straight to my local library.

I've read of this in the Utne Reader before. I'm not sure of the surmised "underground" aspect of it, but for the sake of leaving books to get people to read, why not? Don't they usually put something on the book to let people know that they are to take it?

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND!!!!!!???????????

No. I would/could never do that. For one, I'd feel like I'd forgotten something, somewhere, ALL DAY.

Second, books cost way too much money.

This is what the library is for. Check it out and return it. Somebody else will read it later.

I did however pick up a book left on the bench at the subway station. It was a screenplay for something with Michael Douglas and some other guys.... but it didn't interest me so I handed it to a co-worker.
