post-civil war book

I have a book report due in His202 in college. I was wondering if anyone would / could recommend a good book that deals with anything after the civil war. Presidential biographies was what he really wanted. But anything will do. Any good ones?

When I had this book report due, I read Fear and Loathing, Hunter S. Thompson's notes on the campaign trail. But I'd clear it first, your prof will have to have a sense of humor.
