I would pronounce Herman Wouk's surname as "Wook." But I could so easily be wrong.

To be honest, it probably is spoken like that. It's just that the name has the ring of being that of a German immigrant somewhere up the family tree that makes me pronounce the W in that mainland European way: Vee.

Yeh, I'm with Gem on this one. Woke for sure.

Imagine my surprise when my local children's librarian pronounced the name of Brian Jacques. And here was I using by thickest french accent!

SHE said "jayks". I should have known though, since he's from Liverpool.

Sorry MC, I forgot to check back on this thread.

I always pronounced it Pah-la-niook, which is wrong. Here's what his website says:

PAUL-AH-NIK (Paula Nick). The story goes that Chuck's Grandparents decided to pronounce their name as a combination on their two first names, Paula and Nick. As Chuck relates it: "So many Palahniuk's drop letters from the name. We kept all the letter's but we probably say it the worst.". The 'Old World' pronunciation is PAH-la-NYOOK

Ah, thanks Gem! I've been wondering for a long time how to pronounce that. My sister is in love with a band called Panic! At the Disco and they get a lot of lyrics from his books, so previously whenever we talked about him we'd say his last name as a kind of mushed-up nothing  :D
