Question for Lenny (but everyone else is welcomed to answer)

A portuguese magazine is selling the following books, whose collection is intitled Forbidden Books:
- Emmanuelle, by Emmanuelle Arsan.
- Fanny Hill, by John Cleland.
- The Story Of O, by Pauline Reage.
- Justine, by Marquis de Sade.
- Delta of Venus, by Anais Nin.
- Memoirs of a German Opera Singer, by Wilhelmine Schroeder.

I've already bought the first one and I'm going to buy The Story Of O but I don't really know if the others are any good.

Since you seem to be an expert on the subject Lenny, I'd really appreciate your oppinion...

So, has anyone read them? Which ones should I buy?

They are all classic smut, but I highly recommend:

Emmanuelle
The Story of O
Delta of Venus

I've never read Fanny Hillor Memoirs of a German Opera Singer. I believe the latter is 19th century German work also known as Promiscuous Pauline. I've read bits of Justine, but not the entire book.

After having heard so much about Anais Nin and Delta of Venus, I found it rather pallid and disappointing.

My guess is you would do much better with Lady Chatterly's Lover, which is definitely eyebrow-raising and was also the subject of a landmark court case regarding censorship.

Those are the only two I will claim to have read in that genre. :innocent:
But glad to help. :D

Delta of Venus although not my favorite on this genre,it's anything but pallid. In my opinion. I would think also one being written in 1928 (Lady Chatterly's Lover) and the other in 1978(Delta of Venus),the latter would be a more discriptive ,deeper into the scenes and the freedom of sexual expression.Lady Chatterly's Lover I think is more on the Romance /naughty.

I guess I'll have to reread them both now.
Must have missed the good parts of Delta somehow. :innocent:

This thread is a surprise...

This topic is already being discussed elsewhere, but I would actually second Peder's recommendation of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It's been years since I read it, but remembering it can still make me blush.

That said, I haven't read any of the titles in your Forbidden Books list.

Thanks everyone. I'm reading Lenny's reviews right now and I guess I'll just buy all of them... I'll be sure to let you know what I thought of them.

If anyone's a fan Lady Chatterley's Lover, you should check out the film The Chatterley Affair about 2 jurors, during the book's obscenity trial, who conduct a clandestine affair. The dialogue in the courtroom scenes are taken directly from the actual court records, so you get to hear the actual lawyer/witness testimony from the case.

I love Delta of Venus (my favorite short stories ever).
The beginning of Fanny Hill is so boring I couldn't finish it. Perhaps I'll try again. Someday.

Well, let's not forget Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs.

I read the first few pages of Fanny Hill today and thought it was quite brilliant.

I will be looking for this Lenny.
