question publishing costs

Hi, my novel "The Flight of the Eagle" (2001) has been published by Publish America, a US-company for authors of all kind. I - as the author - did not
have to pay for proofreading, printing, and publication, but the drawback
is that the authors must promote their books on their own (except that
the company put them online in some stores, such as Amazon, B&N...).

I would like to ask now if every company handles it like this. Or if usually
there are companies who also do promotions for the author? Or if authors
must usually pay for printing, production of copies etc.??

I hope some authors can answer.
I am writing a second novel and I am thinking of looking for a company which would do the promotion. I do not live in the US and frankly, promotion is my
biggest problem now, in a non-English speaking country.

Thank you for advice!!!

Promotion for self-published authors is in the hands of the author, for the most part. There are a few companies out there that do little promotion, but they still expect the author to do the majority.
