Questions from a new book collector

I recently started collecting books, but I don't know much about collecting. I simply buy first editions (hard cover) of books that I believe will be rare in the future. Can someone give me some hints as to where I can get more information regarding book collecting (whether the source is a book itself, or subscriptions to magazines)? Any information regarding collecting is welcomed. Also, how do I find the number of books printed by ISBN? Thanks.

I suppose you'd have to find books that were not widely read when new, but will be in demand in the future, which could be difficult. Maybe narrowing it down to a subject in which you are very interested would be easier. I collect books on a particular subject, but then I expect to read them many times, so they won't stay in perfect condition.
