Rajaa Alsanea: Girls of Riyadh

"From the Saudi singles scene in Riyadh to their travels outside the country, four young woman ,Gamrah,Michelle,Sadeem, and Lamees, literally and figuratively shed traditional garb as they negotiate their love lives, their proffesional successes, their rebelions, large and small and ultimately their place somewhere between contemporary and western society and their Islamic home"

Though the story takes place mostly in Saudi Arabia and it deals with Islamic traditions,we could easily replace locality and culture and find that women are dealing with the same issues everywhere.Be it in a marriage that feels like a cage,be ti in falling in love with the wrong person,or dealing with strict parents and what is "proper" behavior and what is not.

Some might read this book and think how terrible it is to be restricted to show emotions, opinions, and actions but some like me who has dealt with traditional issues growing up ,can understand their struggles to be themselves in surroundings that don't allow it.

There are poems and quotes throughout the book and I will leave you with this one:

"Don't wake up a woman in love, let her dream, so that she does not weep when she returns to her bitter reality."
-Mark Twain
