I read it in the mid-to-late 80's. It started during WWII, possibly in Poland, a young couple is involved in the resistance and has a baby. They leave the baby on the doorstep of a woman who does the village wash (and possbily side-lines as a prostitute). The adpotive mother winds up in the US under false pretenses, having assumed the identity of a woman whose American relatives have offered to sponsor her immigration after the war- - the family discovers the deception a number of years later & rejects here and the child. The baby's birth mother survived the war and ends up in Israel, and begins searching for her child.
