Sci Fi Jackpot

A friend of mine has a ton of sci-fi books and has offered to let me "pick and choose" whatever books I want from the collection.

The problem is that I haven't really read much sci-fi except for the occasional Star Wars book.

I asked her to check for Ursula LeGuin (I own Dispossessed, but haven't read it yet) and Terry Pratchett (specifically the discworld series).

Does anyone have suggestions for what would be good for a new sci-fi reader to acquire for free for future reading?

Every respectable sci-fi library should have a copy of Alfred Bester's-The Stars My Destination. I'd also suggest some Ray Bradbury, HG Wells and Jules Verne if she has any.

Can't you hire a lorry or something? Do your picking and choosing at home...

Get Le Guin's Earthsea. And if she has them, more Star Wars stuff (except those of the Star Wars hellspawn Kevin J Anderson).
