I started a book earlier this year that I didn't finish. I can't remember who the author was, but I know he was in some Science Fiction Best 100 list somewhere.
Anyway, it's about this man who lives with his sister and her family. He has an affair with his neighbour who is very young. He doesn't work, but earns more money than he would if he did, by entering newspaper competitions and winning each day.
He has a nephew who listens to amateur radio, and one day the main character and his nephew heard some discussions.
The story is leading toward it becoming apparent that he is not actually real, but is created by the competition people at the newspaper.
He goes on a trip out of town and finds two squaddies. They get a bust tyre and travel miles to a garage... the taxis won't drive out of the area.
That's as much as I remember. It was quite odd but I would like to finish it, and maybe try something else by this author.
