I read a book YEARS ago - I pulled it off the new releases shelf at my local library, so I'm gussing it was published between 2002-2004. I do not remember the author, title, publishing house, nothing. All I have is a plot, and a very unique one at that.
The story circles around a man who is quite prosperous, who lives a good life. He enjoys the finer things the world has to offer, fine wine, art, clothes. A man of high tastes, with a high life style. Because of his sensual tastes, the man is kidnapped.
Once kidnapped, the man is put into a confined space. There are no windows or doors, merely a flap to give him food. Over the course of his 'stay', the man is slowly derived of his precious senses. One by one, his kidnappers rob him of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Using various forms of torture, they remove these senses by physically destroying, mauling, or removing his ears, tongue, hands, etc etc.
The final sense removed is that of his sight - but only one eyeball is removed. I do not remember if the man was released, or if he escaped. I do remember that upon his leaving confinement, he emerges into the public. It takes a while, but once he is outside, he's slowly seen by a crowd of people. They instantly swarm to him, talking and pointing, but without is aural ability, he cannot hear them. One man fianlly pulls out a pen, and writes on the cuff of his shirt: "Are you So-And-So?" So-And-So nods (sorry, don't remember his name!) and they all go mad. It's revealed, either at the end of the story or thruout it, that his days of confinement and torture were logged on the internet.
The book was short, I read it in less than a day. It was a small book, a white cover if I remember properly. The only colours displayed on and thruout it were black and red (again, if I remember correctly).
If anyone knows what this book was, I would be eternally gratfull! I've been trying to find it for almost a year now, and would give just about anything to get my hands on a copy!
