Should these ads air?

CNN had a story on yesterday about acne medicine company Clearasil. They have a new "confidence" campaign where they are trying to be more edgy. The first controversial ad features a young lady and her boyfriend on the couch with her mom, the rest is pretty explanatory.

Baby picture ad

The second ad in question has more of a Mrs. Robinson aspect to it.

You aren't trying to seduce me, are you Mrs. Robinson?:D

I think the ads are hilarious, but I agree, I don't like to see ads with teens mouthing back to parents, that just annoys me to no end. I don't think we should encourage that kind of thing such a wide scale. One lady on the program began talking about "freedom of speech" though she needs to read the constitution. That right is protected from the government censoring speech, anything else is out of bounds. You have to make a distinction somewhere, and one definitely needs to be drawn here.

What do you think?

Well, obviously, teenagers would never talk back to their parents or have sex if it weren't for TV.

If they have aired then the question should be; should they be with-drawn?

I think the confidence claim should be more of a concern.

Your lovely sarcasm makes a good point, but perhaps such stupid things would be less accepted. If we didn't see it everywhere we look, obviously we'd think it's less common, and be less likely to do it ourselves.

I am not offended by these ads and I don't care that they are geared to teen customers.
It's silly to think that a commercial that airs less than 30 seconds would be a more corrupting influence than any 30 to 60 minute program currently airing.

SFG75, the second ad seems to me less Mrs. Robinson and more Eddie Haskell. ;)

Perhaps, but...
1) I really didn't see the "mouthing off" in that ad as all that terrible. It's not like she started screaming obscenities at her mom, is it? Part of growing up is becoming your own individual, distancing yourself from your parents, testing boundaries and becoming your own individual. Anyone who turns 18 without ever having disagreed with their parents would scare me; those are the people you'll find knocking on your door at 8AM on Saturday mornings wanting to hand you religious pamphlets.
2) As Occlith said, TV shows have had cute kids mouthing off at their parents since "Happy Days", and let's not even mention books and movies... I really don't see how one 30-second ad is any more "harmful" than, say, Rebel Without A Cause.

Eh, the second one was just sillly...the first one however, was downright funny. My mom was a lot like that tv mom, so I was rooting for the poor daughter in this one:)

This whole discussion reminds me of the ad from the early 90s that my late father in law utterly despised. I don't remember the product, but the commercial had a toddler seated in a highchair, with his gloppy dinner in a dish shaped like an airplane. The kid did what any normal red-blooded child would do with an airplane-he sent the plane soaring, still filled with food, which of course created a nasty mess on the white carpet under his chair. My fil thought that commercial should be yanked because it would give little kids bad ideas....I thought any parent silly enough to leave a toddler alone in a highchair with an airplane loaded with spaghetti-o's, with a white carpet under the kid..deserved to have to clean it up.:p

Believe it or not, I'm really not that much of a prude. I don't think anyone can deny that kids/youth act out what they see on t.v. Go to any mall and you'll see boys with pants that are five sizes too big with their hat on sideways(the latter makes me want to slap them, but that's beside the matter, it just looks stupid) Are we to seriously believe that popular culture and the media play no role in how people act/behave?

I wear baggie shorts and occasionally a beanie cap. You're not going to smack me, are you, SFG? *Curls into a ball and cries*

As for the commercials, I found them amusing, not offensive. You want "awkward," commercials? Go watch the European one advertising movies. I don't remember the link, but watching the commercial was disturbing. They kept switching from scene to scene to scene to SCENE of people having sex and moaning (all light porn stuff, though, no nudity), and once it was all over, the screen said: "Come Together."

I remember falling out of my chair in tears by that point.

EDIT: Aha! I have found it! Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koRlFnBlDH0

Of course not. I'm just saying that as "youthful rebellion" goes, that first ad was incredibly inoffensive. You can switch to any sitcom or drama series you want and within 2 minutes find things that I'm sure some people will find much more offensive than "'No!' 'Oh yeah.'"

LOL-You're a riot Seven, a pure riot. Beanies are o.k. in my book, just keep the cap forwards, or even backwards. And if you see someone with the cap slightly askew, do them a favor and smack 'em.

O.K., now that was funny.

 :D  :D
