Solved - A School for Sorcery by E. Rose Sabin

I read this book a while ago and I can't remember the name. I believe it was by a woman and was supposed to be a good book to read when waiting for the next Harry Potter books to come out.
All i remember was it was about a girl who goes to a magic school. Something about her roommate turning into a panther. She also goes into some alternate dimensions of some sort. The only other thing i remember is that in the end the students are given gifts and one of her tears turns into a world.

I know this may sound really weird if you don't know what i am talking about, but it was a good book and I'd love to find it.
