I read this book a few years back at the request of a couple of friends, and it was alright at first. The further I got into it, however, the more I wanted to throw it against the wall. Nothing made a whole lot of sense (to me), as far as the characters went. It seemed like the main character, Mike, was being romanticized, as if the reader was to think of him as some sort of being of absolute beauty, speaking of "not wasting", "groking" (which seemed to never really be explained, but that it was beyond the point of having a deep understanding for something/someone) and promiscuous sex with "water brothers". It seemed like so much of what the characters said and did was unneeded, and honestly (and I'm sorry to all of the fans out there), the book was really boring. As I read it, I had a constant look of disgust on my face. I was pretty disappointed by the whole thing.
One thing that disturbed me was that it seemed to be an L. Ron Hubbard creation, as my friends who suggested it to me (and they aren't the only ones I've heard of doing this) created a water circle amongst themselves, following the book as their own holy scripture - only so they could justify sleeping around and outcasting others [who haven't read the book]. I guess that has nothing to do with the book itself, really, but after I was done, I gave that book away and never looked back.
