Stuck in a Rut

Irene Wilde

New Member
The doldrums of summer have settled in. The choking smog and stupor-inducing heat have come to LA and will stay with us through September, bringing with them the realization that I have settled into a plateau these last few months from which I seem unable or unwilling to move.

I need something to give me a swift kick in the pants to get me going again.

Anyone have any remedies? Makeover tips? Daily affirmations? Anything with some motivational zing to it?

Hi Irene,
I sympathize. Would you consider a 3- or 5-day juice fast? Can be very energizing.

Swimming has been helping me get through times like those. While your body travels up and down the pool, your mind is free to wander and sort things out on its own. Plus, it's a great place for inspiration to strike you if you write - at least, I find it so.

Read some poetry and marvel at the stunning language on display.

Go to a funfair. Act like a child. Really, taking yourself back to childishness now and then helps to keep you sane. Along the same lines, read some favourite books from childhood. They'll remind you of that innocent time, but also remind you of all the fabulous things you can now do as an adult.

Travel. You live in a real big place! Go to somewhere completely different in the states to refresh and unwind.

Go to a spa and be pampered.

Above all, realise that life is fun and you only get one shot at it.

or anything else spontaneous and fun. have your palm read. go to a concert on a whim. buy some really frivolous shoes.

Buy a bunny.

Got a bunny. Her name is Bunny. :) She's never in a rut.

I'm broke (temporarily) and stuck in LA, so Bunny, the 8-year-old and I will have to paint each other's toe nails or something and talk the thing over girl-style.

Thanks for kind thoughts and ideas.

Buy some unusual shoes and have a really silly night out is my suggestion. Seems to be pulling me out of my rut.... but I think a pair of cowboy boots would finish the job off nicely... :D

Irene,
I find that one of the best things for getting me out of a rut is hard, physical labor. Chopping wood is always good, or hitting something with a sledgehammer.
But then, there are other kinds of ruts, too. I mean, sometimes they are the kind that require buying books, going to a movie, or treating myself to an unhurried diner breakfast.

Go to a bar. Get really drunk. Start a fight. This should start you off on a Thelma and Louise style adventure. Soon events will be entirely out of control and you'll pop right out of that rut in no time. Of course, then you'll end up plunging head first into the Grand Canyon, but I think that's a little too big to qualify as a rut.

Ha, no. You seem to know an awful lot on the subject, is there something you want to tell us...

I'm a fan of the jerboa.

What subject would that be? Puppies or peanut butter?

Jerboa, stuck in a rut? Are you in the import business?

Peanut butter.

The jerboa has nothing to do with the title of this thread; everything I've said after the ice-cube thing has nothing to do with it. Yes, I import things.

My apologies for missunderstanding you then. It's late and I'm dense, not a winning combination.

I find that peanut butter in a tube spreads more evenly and there is less waste. You get more suck for the buck.

Does crunchy come in a tube, or is it just the smooth? Only, wouldn't the peanut lumps cause a blockage?
