Suggestions in Post-Modernism

Someone I know is looking for suggestions - He like David Foster Wallace, Thomas Pynchon. What is new and along those lines?

Thanks, nifty. Have to do some checking out there myself. I forgot to recommend Barthelme to him, which just doesn't happen very often.

Also, what recommendations do you have for brand spanking new authors? Who is currently carrying the torch?

I like JG Ballard, Calvino, Eco, Kafka, Borges, Marquez, and Murakami.

There are just so many postmodernists to pick from - it's great.

I have Gravity's Rainbow (Pynchon) waiting to be read. And Ulysses (Joyce).

I just got a copy of Ulysses at Waterstones... And now I'm having trouble deciding whether or not I should use one of those "guides to Ulysses" while reading the book. It'll probably be way over my head, but do I want to go back to another book all the time?

I think it may be best just to read it, don't give up, and just see where it takes you. Don't try to follow the story; just let it lead you.

A guide to Joyce will never be accurate. While it can suggest what he may have meant at specific points, it can never be sure.

Honestly, it would be like trying to read a map of a black hole.

LOL. OK, I'll just stick to the book then. Maybe all the stories I've heard make me think the it's harder than it really is, so there's still hope. :)
